◎ Motivation of Engineering Accreditation
CYCU has been established for 50 years till 2006. Now, there are five departments in the college of engineering, including Chemical Engineering, Civil Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Biomedical Engineering and Bioenvironmental Engineering. It is a college known for its long history and large scale with 2,600 people in the undergraduate program, and 731 in graduate program.
In recent years, there are more and more universities and colleges are established in Taiwan, which are at proximately 160. In the future, the number might even go up to be more than 180 since that many colleges are eager to apply for becoming universities. However, due to the huge investment in departments related to college of engineering, the requirement of graduated students is relatively high. Under this circumstance, in order to prevent the quality of graduated students being uneven, the evaluation of departments becomes indispensable. Besides, since Taiwan has already become one of the members of World Trade Organization (WTO), the communication among countries is becoming frequent. If the engineering education fail to keep up with other countries and refuse to accept the international evaluation and the process of authentication, the competition of students in Taiwan will be insufficient to those in other countries. Moreover, the quality of industry will be affected, causing the lack of competition of Taiwan. In this case, we must make engineering accreditation work and it is unavoidable.
The college of engineering in CYCU has accepted the AC2004. In order to make every department of engineering reach to better education, the department of Mechanical Engineering had applied for the commission of being accredited by Institution of Engineering Education Taiwan (IEET) in 2005, expecting to be qualified for every requirement, passing the accreditation by IEET, and make CYCU become one of the top universities in the world.
The departments, students and teachers that join this project also attend other seminars related to the engineering accreditation in Taiwan and other countries, in order to combine the latest evaluation information and then execute it. In this way, we expect to make the effect of evaluation and accreditation more complete and perfect. What is more, the college of engineering makes use of the process of this project to collect the information of academic evaluation and accreditation in Taiwan and aboard, developing suitable ways for CYCU to evaluate and accreditation. Also, it evaluates the engineering-related departments in order to understand the situation and weakness of teaching and academy. Thus, we are able to propose and to execute the ways for improvement. In addition, both the principle, Wan-Lee Cheng, and the chief of Research and Development Department have indicated that they will be as the name of CYCU to fully support the “Engineering and Technology Education Accreditation” program. Therefore, with the ambition and highly support by school, we use the evaluating and accrediting ways which are developed in Taiwan to absorb the precious experiences and information in Taiwan and other countries, in order to make this project finished successfully and perfectly.
